The Neurotic Parent
Have you read The Neurotic Parent’s Guide to College Admissions yet? As parents of kids who are going through the admissions process or have recently gone off to college, you will undoubtedly find yourself in the pages of this book. The natural tendency to make it all okay, to fret about your darling child getting into the ‘best school’ (whatever that means) is — you’ll soon realize — futile and misguided. But it’s also ripe for an uproarious good laugh — at ourselves, the people we know, and the relentless craziness surrounding sending our kids off to college.
KnowsyMoms had the good fortune to meet and chat with author and college parent J.D. Rothman. Here’s an excerpt from our conversation:
KM: In your book, you shine a light on the insanity of parents going through the college admissions and letting go process. Have parents changed since you wrote this book? Has the neurosis increased and why?
JDR: Neurosis continues to increase because although there are fewer applicants, parents are now more concerned about ROI. This year, in addition to worrying about whether their kids will be accepted, parents are also angsting about whether they will ever find jobs.
KM: Colleges today seem to be reaching out more than ever to parents to include them in orientation and campus life. What do you think about that?
JDR: I understand that after all that helicoptering and snowploying, a slow withdrawal is necessary for some parents. But I’m happier to not know the results of their latest beer pong tournament.
KM: If there is one piece of advice you could give to parents who are about to send their eldest kids to college, what would it be?
JDR: Remember, you might be in a catatonic state, but they’re having the time of their lives. They’re joining squirrel clubs, celebrating Nitrogen Day and running the Naked Mile.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. We think you will love this book — particularly now that you’re through the application phase and are witnessing the ups and downs of admissions decisions coming in. It’s the perfect time to laugh it all off!
