Staying Healthy at College

•How Parents Can Help•

Are you a college parent? Better question, are you a college parent who knows how stressful college life can be for your student’s health? Do you worry that they don’t get enough sleep, exercise or nutrition, particularly during exam time?

Most of all, do you want to stop the cycle of your kid coming home from school sick and exhausted at every college break?

As parents, we want the absolute best for our busy students. And we want them to learn to take better care of themselves. There are a few weeks, in particular, when your kids may not call as often as they usually do, and when they do they may complain about how much work they have and how stressed and exhausted they are. Most of the time, they just need to vent so try to refrain from adding to their stress by calling too much or over-reacting.

College is a busy time for students — with minimal sleep and often too much partying — and studying takes a brutal toll on the student’s mind and body. The regular classroom/homework stress may become more manageable over time, but midterm and finals exam stress remains a constant in the typical college student’s life. Material is condensed and studying is often spent in the same spot for hours on end. During exam time, if anyone were to go up to a student (who is probably on their way to the library-coffee in hand) and asked “What are finals like?” their responses would most likely revolve around topics pertaining to lack of sleep, low energy, poor eating, increased infections, low immunity, and stress.

Studies have shown that stress negatively impacts a student’s academic performance. However, if students are adequately prepared ahead of time, choose healthy snacks to fuel them, and devote a few minutes a day to exercise, their stress will not only be lessened but they will also steer away from getting sick. Exercise not only combats weight gain from sitting countless hours in a library snacking on chips, but is also known to combat health conditions and diseases. Exercise creates a natural boost of energy and also improves one’s mood; physical activity activates various brain chemicals leaving the student more relaxed, happier, and more confident.

So how can you encourage them to exercise and eat better at college when they already feel pressed for time? How can you show your kid you care about their health and wellbeing, and give them the tools to be well and do well?

I’ve been fascinated by this very dilemma and spent years studying college student health and fitness.
