1. Plastic Storage Bins

Dorm rooms are notoriously tiny and there’s not a lot of storage space. These plastic bins are great because they have drawers that slide out instead of tops that snap on, and can be stacked on top of one another. Since most dorm beds are adjustable and can be raised up, we love these for under the bed storage. Buy 2-4 of them and your kid will be set!

2. Bedding

At college, kids spend tons of time in bed — reading, studying, hanging out, and oh yeah — sleeping. We really wanted to make their beds super comfy, and figure you’ll probably want to do the same for yours. Tip: College beds are typically longer so you’ll need to buy Twin XL mattress covers and sheets but Twin blankets usually fit just fine. Here’s our Bedding Step-by-Step directions:

Step 1:  Bed Bug/Allergy Protector goes on first. Zips around the mattress. (Because you don’t know where that mattress has been.)

Step 2:  Mattress Topper goes on top. Adds a much-needed layer of cushion. (Because this is not a fancy mattress.)

Step 3:  Mattress Pad stretches around and holds the mattress topper in place.

Step 4:  Twin XL sheets are next! Buy 2 sets (fitted sheet & flat sheet & pillowcases). You don’t have to go crazy with thread count but you can do better than the sheets the college offers to sell you.

Step 5: Comforter/Duvet in size Twin or Twin XL. The best for last. Here are a few of our favorites:

3. Laundry Hamper

Students confirm — the pop-up style hamper is inexpensive and works great. With a pocket to stash your detergent and a strap for the haul to the laundry room, this one does the trick.

4. Hangers

Yes, they need special hangers at college. The closets in dorm rooms are very small so to maximize the space, try these thin hangers. Plus they are felt lined so clothes won’t fall off and into a heap at the bottom of the very small closet. (And stay there until Parents Weekend.)

5. Bedrest Pillow

According to students, this one’s essential. There’s not much room on dorm room desks so most students do the bulk of their studying on their bed. This comfy bed rest might be one of the best things they bring with them to college. Comes in a variety of colors!

6. Dustbuster

One of our sons refused the Dustbuster we bought him in August before he left for college. Didn’t think he’d need it and was trying to travel light. By Parents Weekend in October, he had realized that dorm rooms get super dusty and dirty, and practically begged for one.
